Do you have a moment for pure genius?

Please read this story and comment.
How many times do you think we walk past something beautiful without noticing it?

  1. In my opinion, the violinist didn't get much attention because no one realized he was actually famous, playing the most well known songs using one of the most expensive guitars. Another reason is that the people at the station were busy getting to work, of course and they wouldn't have time to listen to the music. Also, they might get scold at if they arrive late at work and they can't just say "I was busy listening to a famous piece of note played by a famous artist in the subway"right? No one would ever believe that and they definitely do not want to lose thier jobs because of it.

  2. At anywhere, a true genius demonstrates his knowledge and beauty. Some of us think that a genius should be true to who he/she is and appreciates his advantages and keeps them to ourselves if there is no one there to notice him/her. On the other hand, I think a true genius has to know how to show his/her intelligence to all other people. Like the musician. He is a world celebrity, but what is the use when people don't notice it? Sometimes, we recognize talent in some unexpected circumstance and sometimes we don't. Conclusively, a true genius has to be genius in his talent and his ways of demonstrating his talent in any situation.

  3. Why do we appreciate him when we're listening to him in a concert, but not when we hear him on the street? And why did the mothers not let their children stop and listen to beautiful music?

  4. Pitou, do you mean that the musician wasn't trying hard enough or should have done something differently for people to notice him?

  5. For me this isn't a shocker! I hope this doesn't offend anyone but people in Washington seems to live in their own private bubble, much like people in London, Paris, Rome, or any other major city in the world. People there never seem to have the time to give their attention to others they don't have business with, no matter if the person is a famous violinist or pianist or composer. The only people who seem to have attention in public places like Metro Station would be mainstream entertainers!

  6. hmm...when he play in a theater and advertised his name everywhere people notice and please him well. People look up to him, but when he play on the road no one pay attention because they think he play for money. Just to recap the whole idea, most people judge a master piece through where it placed....

  7. Some people might think a famous celebrity or genius who is able to earn lots of money wouldn't stand and make sense of their talent to earn money little money in which they could earn more. However, sometimes it's wrong. Some geniuses want to so something unique - such as this man Joshua Bell. He played the one of the greatest written song with his violin which worth about 3.5 million dollars. No one recognized him. It's because that people who walked by they were in such a rush and also they only think about the outside of a person. I mean they don't think what's inside the person. What talent he or she has. Well next time we should be more awareness because we might spend 100$ and more on going to his play. Isn't it better to listen to one of the greatest song freely? Anyway you might lose a true genius if you still look on the outside...

  9. I think that the violinist wanted to make the people felt strange because he wanted to know that what did they feel when they saw a famous violinist was playing violin on the street but not in the theatre. But nobody realized that he was the famous person.

  10. Well, that's natural. For most people, they don't actually care about what's happening in public. I have to agree with Steven, just like in Cambodia (or elsewhere), people always put their heads down instead of face the others and realize what's happening! Anyway, nothing's is different to THEM, they just don't bother to leave their eyes on those kind of things because they might think that it would be a waste of time watching a street performance rather than sit in a air conditionered concert room!

  12. I think it was definitely strange that a famous violinist was playing his violin on the street, not in the theater. Perhaps he wanted to know how people realize, if he perform on the street like that. But nobody knew it was him.

  13. Teacher, I mean that the musician was doing his best but the matter is that he was in the wrong circumstance as everyone was busy thinking about their lives and forget noticing him as a genius. I don't know what different thing he should have done but I still don't think that playing a classic song like he did in a station is the right thing for all violist geniuses to do.

  14. Well,it was pity that lots of people missed the chance to watch such a nice piece of music playing by a world class violinist, using violins costs millions dollars. But in fact i think if i were one of the people walking in that subway,i would miss that also because as my walking and other people's walking habit,we mostly look forward and may spend only seconds and if we see sth in front of us,we will just walk at the other side.Other possibility to miss that because subway is such a very crowded and busy place so people can easily lose their things in the crowd so they will decide not to stop.Of course, they are on the way to their work,in hurry, they wouldn't stop because then they may be late for their work.I guess he would get more attentions if he wore formal clothes, much like a famous musician. I admit i would stop and watch for a while only if i were on my way to school/work and i would watch the whole of it if at that time i was free and had nothing to be hurry for. Although they missed chance, there are still chances for them to see he performing again.

  15. I really loved reading all of your comments! As the author asked, I wonder how many things we miss every day, because we are too much in a hurry? I know that I often don't pay attention. I keep trying to remember to slow down and enjoy life.

Thanks for thinking about this and sharing your ideas. I like that all of you don't have the same opinion, it makes it even more interesting :)
